Then you can use Windows 8 as just an updated Windows 7 and be happy.Robin

GuillermoBarrancos
tried it and still didn't like itI prefer a full version (Ultimate 7) with full admin & network control'sAre you serious? You do know that Windows 8 "is" Windows 7 with just the "Metro" UI slapped on top of it?They brought the start menu back with Windows 8.1 and now with Windows 8.1.1 you boot straight to desktop by default when it doesn´t detect a touch screen.I have practically used all versions of Windows, from v.3.1 all the way to Windows 8.I have used Windows 7 and Windows 8 extensively for both work and private the last years ever since it came out. When you take away the metro UI (which you could always completely ignore if you wanted to), there is no difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8. Just that Windows 8 is even better in performance and on battery life (Laptops).I admit myself that it took me a while, but the Metro UI has really grown on to me and I have not a single icon left anymore on the desktop.I absolutely love the UI now, especially since the 8.1 update, as now you can group everything with group names and all. It´s fantastic. I have all my programs nicely sorted and grouped.Gone is the whole icon clutter on my desktop days.I think too many People just (litterly) fear change and don´t give it a change or are unwilling to adapt to something new.I think life would become boring if everything would stay the same forever and never change. But that´s just me.
oldpink
I go back to the old Dos 3.0 days and have been through many software changes over the yearssometimes Microsoft get it right and were getting better with XP and Win 7, I'll excuse Vista as it was a stop gap and showed its self as muchas to Win 8 and 7 being the same maybe at the home edition level but not at the Pro or ultimate level7 is far easier to setup networking on multiple levels and 7 is far better supported for driversin an ideal world I'd run Unix / Ubuntu but sadly they are not supported for most of the work I do I don't fear change but when I see it as a backward step I'd rather avoid it

But that aside.I really still think it´s mostly emotional based tho. No offense. I really didn´t notice a single difference, aside from the inclusion of the Metro UI and Windows App store.Under the Hood, both Windows 7 and Windows 8 use the same kernel as Windows Vista.Me too, I had no issues with Windows Vista. It just reminded me to upgrade my system and when I did it ran fine for years. Tho Windows 7 was a revelation. Much faster and cleaner. For me, Windows 8 is a further improvement on that. Davey-T
As Rob is finished with this thread can I hijack it on a similar topic I'm looking to get a new laptop for the obsy and star parties, was looking to avoid Win 8 and get one of the business versions that still come with Win 7, am I deluded in thinking 7 will be less trouble than 8 ?Definitely don't want to be smearing my fingers all over the screen.Main concern other than running usual astro software is battery life, is Win8 really more battery friendly than 7.Also thinking of 13" screen as won't be doing any image processing on it.Dave

oldpink
I wouldn't use a laptop for processing you really need some decent power for that side of itthe laptop is more a storage and control device unless you want to buy an X5 core with 8gb memory and a Terra bite of HDwin 8 will run the usual Astro software

There are plenty high performance laptops to buy that give enough performance for processing.A stationary PC gives more performance for the money, but unless you can afford both laptop and a PC, your bound to your home with imaging as well.Something to think about if you want to be mobile and use it for other purposes as well. That's why I bought the MacBook Pro Retina last year with top CPU spec, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD.If you don't mind the weight, the ASUS G range of gamer laptops are very powerfull, offering desktop performance.Like the G55 and G75 laptops.I had a G75VW before and they are excellent. Easy to add extra RAM and two easy accessible harddrive bays to increase your storage needs.I don't have a stanionary PC anymore for the last 4 years now and don't miss it at all. Davey-T
I think I said I only want it for guiding and capturing as have a hi spec laptop for processing which I have to cart about for capturing at the moment, really more interested in battery life, can the manufacturers battery life figures be relied on ? and is Win 8 really more battery efficient ?Dave

Even with Windows 8 via bootcamp. My MacBook Retina battery lasts me 3 hours easily under heavy use at work, running Outlook, online Lync meetings, presentations, etc.Under normal load the battery lasts easily quite a bit longer.I use the balanced powersaving mode and only adjust the sleep setting and dissable sleep of the HDD. And some small other personal tweaks.
GuillermoBarrancos
PS. Regarding Windows 8 and Laptop battery life. There is definitely noticable improvement in battery life with Windows 8 over Windows 7.(Sorry was busy putting my son to bed and was a bit rushing with my previous post.) Apple isn't so generous to give a free copy of a rival OS. LOL. Eventho Microsoft saved them from bankruptcy a decade ago and owns a large amount of Apple shares. Vanilla
I one of the techs that actually likes Windows 8.1 (64 bit with Asus Saber and 16 gig mem)I find it faster than anything Microsoft has come up with before. I also like 7 and xp but win 8.1 is better for me.Your mileage my vary
