Lyrids!!! Beginner Question

Recommended Posts

I have my Celestron Nexstar 8SE ready to go tonight, but the more I think of it, despite clear skies forecasted here with above average transparency... is a telescope like mine gonna capture anything stunning? My gut instinct is to take my own eyes outside tonight and maybe some binos. Does anyone have any opinion or input on using the 'scope tonight for the purposes of watching the Lyrids??!?!?

In my very limited experience I would have thought you'll see more just looking up at the sky than you will through your scope. The scope will be looking at such a small patch of sky you'll likely miss the majority of it.

Ok, for meteors you get out a sun lounger and get yourself comfortable, facing the general direction of the radiant. Midnight onwards is a good time. You only need your eyes, a pencil and a note pad to estimate the number of Lyrids per hour and the magnitude of the brightest.

Relax and enjoy and give your neighbours a topic of conversation for weeks to come!

this is way to enjoy any meteor shower, certainly better than my idea to take several hundred 30 secs exposures and try to capture one!
