South Wales Star Party October 2014

Recommended Posts

SW3 will be our third year at Pencelli Castle Caravan and Camping Park. Its nestled in the northern area if the Brecon Beacons National Park and offers some truly dark skies which are excellent for observing and imaging.

The main nights will be thursday 23rd, friday 24th and saturday 25th october 2014 but people are welcome to arrive as early in the week as they desire.

Pitches and hardstandings can be booked in the The Oaks area. This is where EHUs are available along with the least obstructed views of the night sky, but it is relatively small so places are limited. Early booking is advisable. A site map of the park can be found at the bottom of the campsite homepage.

Tents can also be pitched in The Meadow area if the The Oaks gets full. It offers excellent views but no EHUs or hardstandings are available here.

Bookings are to be made directly by yourself with the campsite. Please mention that you are with the astronomy group so that the campsite owners will place you in a pitch alongside the rest of us. As it stands these are the pitches that have already been booked - 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 25, 29.

It would also be helpful if I can be informed of any bookings made so that I can keep track of numbers going and the pitch locations, etc.

If anyone has any queries please don't hesitate to ask or feel free to send me a PM.

Hope you can make it and look forward to seeing you.

David

James is coming aswel, great. We're already at record numbers now would be brilliant if we could fill the oaks. Matt,Pete,Luke,Rhys any others it's a great weekend would be wonderful to see you

My sentiments too Steve.

It would be good if other Observers could also stop by for a visit and a chat,

as the star party is "not" just limited to those of us from South Wales.

Well I'm certainly nowhere near South Wales lol & this will be my third time, mind you that's why I've booked some extra days this year to make the most of those skies.

Looking forward to catching up & meeting you all again this year.

Here's a few pictures from the last two events,

Great pics, whats that in the sky above the green tent in the night picture?

If you're referring to what's in the sky. I think it's a star trail as the photo seems to be in long exposure by the trail of torch lights.  If it the small green light just above and to the right of the tent, no idea.

I just shoved my camera on a tripod & did a 5 minute exposure & that's what I ended up with. Probably is a star trail I think there are some fainter ones showing too.

I've moved on a bit since lol.

There isn't  a cut off date to book per se. Mrs Rees said she would keep 13 spaces for us with firm confirmations up to the week before the event.

After that anyone who wanted a pitch allocated to the SWG  could have one.

There is also no reason not to attend if all the allocated pitches are sold. You can pitch on other ones, they just wont be close to the main group. HTH

Hi estwing

When you booked did you tell them you were with the astronomy group. Pitch 20 is the other side of the Oak where the main group is,

Are you in a van or tent, and what dates did you book.

Not long to go , I'm starting to get my gear sorted already.
