Comet C/2012 K1 PANSTARRS

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen this comet here before and had no idea what to expect, but decided to give it a go anyway - and i don't regret it! :)

C/2012 K1 had a magnetude of around 9 actording to Stellarium.

60x 120 sec exposures @ ISO1600 with the 550D and Explorer 200 PDS.

Stacked in DSS using stars and comet freeze.

[REMOVED WORD, REMOVED WORD, REMOVED WORD] clouds, fired up the big gun in a cloudless sky ready to image Panstarrs K1, found it easier than I thought I would, focused and looping waiting for it to get a bit darker, even found a nice guide star, started first exposure and wondered where the guide star had gone, looked up and CLOUDS, hung around for a bit but have now given up.

After packing up last night (see above ) the clouds thinned a bit so I started again and just managed three 180secs subs before it clouded over again, not very impressive but I might not get another chance, still hazy cloud and green comet sub had moved a bit.

  • 3 weeks later...

As i found out I've missed bigtime on the colors, I've done a reprocess and left the comets colors untouched.

What do you guys think about this verson compared to the first?

You guys are getting great images. If these comets are so fast moving, and subs are quick, I might be able to get some results with my alt-az. That's if the clouds cooperate of course...

I only used 2 min exposures as i found out i'd have to guide on the comet instead for longer exposures. Probably worth a go with the alt az too. :-)

Acording to stellarium after an update its actually dimmer now - can someone confirm this? I expected an increase in brightness, not a decrease..

Back in February it was about mag 10 now supposed to be about 8.5, think it's made it's closest approach last month so don't know how that affects brightness, due to disappear into the sunset early August and then off to southern hemisphere. So need to capture it ASAP :)

Managed a few subs the other night but cloudy since.

cometS are incredibly unpredictable, one minute they are the "comet of the century" the next they are just boring comet ISON!
