Query about EQ5 and 130P-DS

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm just starting out so please go easy on my lack of knowledge!

I've got two questions, the first being the important one:

1) I've purchased a second hand EQ5 which came with the ADM dual saddle upgrade for EQ5 and CG5, as sold by FLO: http://www.firstlightoptics.com/celestron-mounts/adm-dual-saddle-upgrade-for-eq5-and-cg5-mounts.html

I've also purchased a new 130P-DS from FLO. The dovetail (is that the correct term?) on the scope rings doesn't attach to the dual saddle. At least, I can't see how to do it. Can anyone tell me which saddle I should buy which will fit both the EQ5 and the 130P-DS?

2) I understand how EP's work in combination with Barlows, but apart from these what would be the next important things to purchase for lunar/planetary observing? I have picked this as the next purchase: http://www.firstlightoptics.com/moon-neutral-density-filters/variable-polarizing-moon-filter.html ...would anyone advise something else as being more important?

Many thanks for reading.

The dovetail should just sit inside the lower grooves on the saddle, then just tighten up the 2 knobs to clamp the dovetail into place.

Thanks....I've attached a picture of the dovetail sitting above the saddle - the bolts on the dovetail are not set into the dovetail and the distance between the bolts on the left and right ends of the dovetail is about 2/3 mm too short for them to protrude beyond the ends of the saddle. Hope that explains my problem.

The picture only shows the right end of the arrangement but it's symmetrical at the other end.

:(

Ah I see what you mean, looks like the dovetail is too short for the saddle. I think the easiest solution would be to get a longer dovetail so you can space the rings out a little more. Or if you are not wanting to wait and don't mind a bit of DIY does it look possible to file a recess out of the saddle to make room for the bolt heads to sit in?

Thanks Helite - that makes sense. The longest version of these should do nicely: http://www.firstlightoptics.com/skywatcher-mounts/skywatcher-dovetail-mounting-plates.html

I wonder whether anyone has any thoughts on this question - I'd rather pay only one lot of P&P to FLO :)
