Sometimes headlines make me despair

When you see headlines in a UK newspaper like this:

Meteor shower to light up Britain NEXT WEEK: Incredible shooting stars will fall like RAIN

[ref: http://www.express.co.uk/news/nature/471048/UK-Meteor-shower-Where-and-how-to-watch-Lyrids-meteorites-as-they-pass-over-Britain?google_editors_picks=true]

And the expectations it sets in the public's mind - compared to the best possible reality, it does make you wonder how to react and what the "journalists" (if that isn't too strong a term) were thinking. :BangHead:

I really don't get why they hype them up like this. I mean, surely it's better to tell them the truth of what to expect, rather than a pack of lies that therein leave them disappointed and uninterested the next time...

Anything to catch the eye, the goal is always the sale, the hunt for higher circulation numbers/clicks/advert views, truth can just mind it's own business and move on. :)

More likely it'll be rain falling like rain :)

Dave

Haha, exactly! :D

I hate this sensationalisation as well. :angry2:

It does more harm than good, it's the sort of thing that leads people to buy

el-cheapo 60mm refractors and expect to see Hubble photo images when

they put their eye to the eyepiece.

I would rather they said nothing at all if this type of BS is the best they can do! :cwm10:

Let's just hope that a few more folks will have their eyes on the sky. Some might even think "damn, if it wasn't for all this street lighting we may have been able to see the whole show"............. From small beginnings and all that!!

I get asked in work about headlines my colleagues have read in the newspapers, with things like `see the Moon as big as a house` or `planets in line going to cause earthquakes`.

I end up having to do a bit of explaining to put things back into context, then they feel a bit disappointed!

I don't think you understand how the world of journalism works!

It is all about an attention grabbing headline.

Don't forgot the journalist's maxim... "never let the truth get in the way of a good story"!
