Leo trio

I think the Leo trio were the first galaxies I ever tried sketching.

I used the same scope as you but the skies were fairly good at around LM 6.3-6.4 and from memory NGC 3628 was seen by direct vision but only just.

No problem seeing all three from a dark, moonless location as illustrated above in Mikes sketch. If your light pollution is a challenge so will seeing any of them.  Will be a two or three hour opportunity tonight, at least up here, for dark sky observing before moon rise.

M65 and 66 are brighter than NGC 3626, so you may well see 65 & 66 and miss the NGC galaxy.

If you look at the sketch in post # 4, there is an obvious star between the M objects and the NGC that gives a good guide where to look for the NGC ( the longer and narrower one ) relative to the others.

If you can get to a dark site, your odds of success go up a lot, a small scope gets the job done at a dark site, from town a larger scope may well struggle to see all three.

Good luck, Ed.

All three clearly visible last night, from a club meet dark site, even though transparency wasn't the best. Splinter galaxy was very faint, though I managed the Markarian's Chain before the moon crept in.
