wookie1965
Congratulations i have been trying to view these for two years now with no luck
YKSE
I managed to them (M65, M66 only, not NGC3628) with 130P in my backyard with BCO 18mm. The chair-shaped asterism is a very good indicator in finderscope.
Mike73
I think the Leo trio were the first galaxies I ever tried sketching.I used the same scope as you but the skies were fairly good at around LM 6.3-6.4 and from memory NGC 3628 was seen by direct vision but only just. scarp15
No problem seeing all three from a dark, moonless location as illustrated above in Mikes sketch. If your light pollution is a challenge so will seeing any of them. Will be a two or three hour opportunity tonight, at least up here, for dark sky observing before moon rise. NGC 1502
M65 and 66 are brighter than NGC 3626, so you may well see 65 & 66 and miss the NGC galaxy. If you look at the sketch in post # 4, there is an obvious star between the M objects and the NGC that gives a good guide where to look for the NGC ( the longer and narrower one ) relative to the others. If you can get to a dark site, your odds of success go up a lot, a small scope gets the job done at a dark site, from town a larger scope may well struggle to see all three.Good luck, Ed. darthvader
Thanks, judging from above I was looking in the right place.Ill give it another go tonight I reckon - last night the moon was just rising whilst i was looking so that probably didn't help. ollypenrice
The moon will kill the Hamburger for sure. I have seen it here in 85mm quite easily but this is a dark site. On the other hand my eyesight is dismal! Dark site, no moon, attaboy...Olly

jason.p
I found NGC 3628 last night, but only with a bit of averted vision. Having found it, it becomes more and more obvious until you wonder how you couldn't see it to start with!
darthvader
Managed to see it last night with averted vision but it was very faint.Any other good sights in this vicinity I could try for?
Moonshane
I cannot see the NGC easily at home even with my 16" dob. at SGL9 recently it was very obvious with direct vision. the darkness of skies always makes a big difference to galaxies. JimmyC
Managed all three last night at the dark site. Conditions were very favourable. As much as they were smudges of light, they were all very prominent in the FOV and a lovely sight to see
scarp15
All three clearly visible last night, from a club meet dark site, even though transparency wasn't the best. Splinter galaxy was very faint, though I managed the Markarian's Chain before the moon crept in.
