jaygpoo
Hi all you clever lot out there. Can you help. I have just brought a SK MAK90 in mint condition as a grab and go scope to add to my already large equipment kit. I am told it has hardly ever been used . I set it up the other night to see what it could do and looked at the moon and Jupiter. As I turned the focus knob to obtain focus the object came into focus and then went and I had to turn the knob the other way to get focus back but it was not sharp. The colination appears to be ok but as I have never experienced mirror flop is that what is causing the focus to rock about. The knob is not what I would call stiff or firm. It is fairly loose but it has travel both ways and stops. Is this something I could get checked or is it just not worth it or could I take the scope apart and check the mirror adjustment? Not sure if there is anything wrong but as I have had a skymax 127 in the past the focus adjustment does not feel the same. Any thoughts would be welcome. Peter Drew
The "lack of use" may be the key. It's possible that the lubricant on the component that the primary mirror slides on has either hardened or migrated to one end. You could try going through the complete focusing range a few times to see if this eases things.
