Hi Ramsay and welcome to SGL - As an imager myself and prior to that enjoying photography, I would say forget everything you know so far!! AP is totally different to anything you will have done so far. If you are interested in galaxies and nebula's then the book ;Making Every Photon Count' from the book section of the FLO website is a good buy.

As counterproductive as it may sound, it's all about the mount for DSO imaging.

I was in Fife at aberdour over last 9/10 days doing star trails, Check my photos on my flickr. 

I am using a 550D (Upgrading soon) Manfrotto tripod and ball head. with skywatcher 70mm? telescope. Hope thats correct
