Chain drive for my obs roof.

I have been tinkering with old bikes I got from the salvation army's ReCycle centre in Swindon to mechanise the opening and closing of my obs roof.

Here is the result which should also take well to motorising at a later date.

Nice one :)  I considered bicycle chain for mine but found driving the chain a design problem.  I think some form of overload safety feature will be needed with a motor drive.  I shall be using yacht rope for mine driven from a 12v winch (designed for things like winching boats on trolleys in and out of the water). This is reversible and run off a car battery using 12v 70A car relays to control the current.  I carried out a test some time ago and it worked.  Now I'm working on a better version.  I have a thread in the DIY Observatories forum.

Thanks guys,

I haven't given the motor drive much thought, something along the lines of a friction belt running around the bike wheel to a drill or car window motor .Set to slip just after the tension needed to roll the roof on and off, that way if the load is increased by something like a finger it should just slip.

Thanks for the Gina, loads of great info.

Mike.
