I need help choosing "recommended" EPs for a 70ED

Hello Dear SGL Community,

I've done a good amount of reading about scopes and mounts however have not yet caught up with EPs very well and need a hand with choosig from "recommended" EPs do I accept  from:
http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p1151_TS-Optics-70mm-f-6-ED-Refractor-APO-Telescope---Carbon-Tube---2--Crayford.html

They say 6, 5 and 4mm but which one or all of them and of the kind they say?

I heard Plossyls are the best nowadays but they recommend H(Huygens? or planetary?)

I'd like to order them soon as the 70ED (tube and focuser only) arrives soon.
Many Thanks!
John

John,

If you have a bit more cash to spend than the eyepieces quoted above the Vixen SLV's will be worth considering.

http://www.firstlightoptics.com/vixen-eyepieces/vixen-slv-eyepieces.html

If you really want to push the boat out the Televue Nagler 3-6mm zoom is excellent, it is expensive but you are getting 4 eyepieces in one with 50 degree FOV across the range.

http://www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/language/en/info/p1776_TeleVue-Nagler-Zoom-3-6mm---high-quality-planetary-zoom.html

All of the above are very light and will not cause any balance issues.

I have a little 70mm scope, not ED but similar enough, mine is a Meade ETX-70 goto at f/5.

I use the scope as a grab-and-go and I keep it in the car for use at any public event I get along to.

All the bits I keep in a trolly bag and the eyepiece are: 5mm, 8mm and 25mm.

These are the BST Starguiders and they are identical to the TS NED eyepieces.

So in line with Robin I would suggest those and in the focal lengths I have found most appropriate for a scope of 70mm.

John,

I have 5mm, 9mm, and 15mm TS HR planetary, and I've had BST starguider ED 8mm and 12mm, I've used them in 80ED.

To my eye, my TS HR planetaries are as good as the BST starguider ED (the type eyepiece as TS NED), but TS HRs show less scatter light on Jupiter, thus more constrasty view. I would not hesitate to pick the HR planetary over NED even if the cost is the same.

If you don't wear glasses in observing, Baader Classic Ortho 6mm should be a better choice of planetary viewing.

PS. HR planetary is clone of TMB planetary, invented by late Thomas Back. There're many TMB clones out there with different quality, of the reviews I've and my comparision to BST starguider, TS HR planetary is of the best among all the TMB clones.

Okay,

So far I've got a Baader Classic Ortho 6mm in the shopping cart - from what you guys said this is good for planets.

Now how about stars (splitting stars), clusters, nebulae? Is that the BST starguider ED 8mm and 12mm?

Oh, many, many thanks so far for your collective help.

Couldn't do it without.

As you don't wear glasses in observing, I would recommend the whole BCO serie, i.e. BCO 10mm, 18mm and QT2.25x barlow, with these, you'll have EPs of almost top optical performance. If the seller (TS?) can offter a good package price including the 32mm plössl, you'll have a finder EP as good as BST 25mm.

Thanks YKSE and friends,

Ill look into the BCOs and Plossl (just got the hang of spelling that).

I just picked up Baader Classic Ortho 5 & 10mm EPs used for 87 euros.

The guy had also the 6 & 18mm avail.

He has also several Astro Professional 3, 5mm, 14mm and a 13mm Hyperion.

Looking for the Barlow and 32 Plossl now.

You guys are golden,

John

I have a couple of the scopes you are talking about and I imagine they are the same, mine have the carbon fiber tubes which on such a small scope is a bit of a gimmik. I use my scope up to a 3mm eyepiece and they handle this power (X140) fairly well, better than I thought. I again agree with site, very short eyerelief can become hard work even for someone who has been at the hobby for many years. I believe Telskop Services do a range of planetary eyepieces that someone has mentioned, I am hoping to test a couple in the next few weeks against stronger players. The BST explorer is always highly rated by site as well.

Alan.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for all your inputs.

Good grief, I got the 150mm and am at square one with EPs now. That and didn't get off square one with the 70mm...! I do actually have three or four EPs that I have acquired without truly knowing what I was doing. (adding them to my sig now)

I did catch Andromeda for the first time last night... ( was certain it was m31)

it was super faint with the 6mm TS ortho (my highest power)... had a heck of a time finding peak focus...

I had an even harder time trying to catch prime focus images with the camera. After a series of shots I switch to the Pleiades (I think it was them) and noticed the focus was a good deal off which told me to shoot something like that first them goto the fuzzy stuff.

Iksobarg, my scope has the same specs as yours so my recommendations would be for the Maxvision range in particular the 24 and 16mm. They work very well in my scope, the Vixen NLV, BGO and TMB designed are also extremely good. I spent quite a bit of time this year buying eyepieces and comparing them. I have narrowed it down to what is in my signature and even then I think the BGO is surplus to requirements.

What a great question - I have just purchased the same scope and also wondering what to add to my current small EP collection.

Some great advice there so far, people.

Thanks :)
