Supernova in M99 (Type Ic)

Interesting development in M99

Still at mag 15.4 on January 28. If it brightens enough, I might be able to observe my 10th SN

This thing has brightened to 15.4 from 17+ in two days so it is definately a maybe......

Not much news on photometry on the site I linked to. We will have to be patient

If you go on aavso and plot a light curve, it has data for vis and photometry.

I haven't looked into photometry, will have to do some reading on it. Not sure if I'll even be able to do it with an slr and unguided dob, I expect the exposures would be too long for it!

If the sky's ever clear then I will be looking out but of late all were getting is clouds rain & more clouds & rain Grrrrr!

Had a good view of M99 this morning, no sign of the SN though

It's very dim, currently mag 15.4! M82 SN 2104J is a better bet, around 10.5. I haven't had a clear night in a week to try for it again though!

The M82 on is the easiest SN to see of the 7 I've observed to date both because of it's brightness and that it's located in a host galaxy thats one of the easiest to find. The faintest I've managed was around mag 13.8 and that needed a 12" scope and a very dark night from my back garden.

I'd say the M99 SN needs to brighten up 2 magnitudes to make it accessible to scopes in the 8-10 inch range.
