Well here we go again - 2013 was in the end a pretty decent year for observing in S Wales so I'll try and compare statistics to see if we can see any patterns emerging.

James F made a good point on another thread that the observable nights are actually "practical" observable nights so clear skies between 5pm and midnight - midweek and later on the weekend and at least an hour in duration which for me with my current set up would seem reasonable

After last years embarrassing and pessimistic forecasts anyone fancy chancing a prediction for this years totals either in nights or percentage terms please feel free.

For what its worth I think the current weather pattern is set to change in the latter half of January to a far colder and hopefully clearer outlook so I'm getting in early with an optimistic 30% chance of observing nights for 2014.

Well found a good source for weather data whilst my weather station is down and the readings from Treharris are only a few miles away though about 50 metres less elevated so shouldn't be too far away - and look at the resurgence in optimism from the Welsh astronomers despite the appalling weather- my uncle was actually evacuated from his home in St Brides last night by the police pending storm surges this morning- hope he's ok.

Well last night was a pleasant suprize especially if you got out early. I was at a party at a friends house and didn't get home until @  2am - the sky was crystal clear at that part of the night - wasn't expecting anything at all but stayed out just for 10 minutes before I went to bed just to stare upwards.

Wow 56% that is positive Mike. I guess at this stage we don't know wheteher last year was a bit of a good year or not considering everyone was predicting sub 20%

Could be the 13 in 2013 had a negative subliminal effect ?

The guys on the weather forums are just started to look at a cold period starting as early as late next week so fingers crossed a move away from the horrendous foul conditions of the last two months

It looks like we might be on the verge of some observing opportunities tonight and at the weekend. Too cloudy to have any chance of seeing the aurora last night for me but pleasantly suprized to see pretty much clear skies when I got up this morning - hopefully the start of observing 2014 is on the horizon

I think last night would have been pretty frustrating as the clouds came and went through the night but early in the evening there were lots of opportunities and suprizingly good seeing aswel. Not sure what it is about observing straight after the rain - seems to clear the atmosphere when you would expect the opposite

You had to wait a while last night but from 10pm onwards the sky was really clear and crisp - shame about the moon but hopefully its starting to do the decent thing for us. I suspect last night was the coldest of the year to date judging by my car this morning- will have to update later today.
