Comet C/2012 X1 (LINEAR) does a Comet Holmes!

Recommended Posts

Just noticed on Spaceweather that Comet C/2012 X1 (LINEAR) has exploded/disintegrated, gone from mag +14  to  +8.5

Dare say Nick H will be along at some point with details and updates.

Thats an awesome find. Thanks for sharing.

What would cause it the explode like that? Especially since its heading away from the sun now and cooling down not heating up.

Holmes flared up at much larger distances from the sun. In this case something in the deeper layer may in fact still be getting warmer, as heat is conducted from the outside inwards, and pockets of material might suddenly erupt.
