Spent the day on the mill

Recommended Posts

I spent most of saterday at work on the milling machine. This is my first go at machining and I am happy with how it came out. It would have been a lot easyer to just buy one, but I never do things the easy way:D

It has cost me £3 for some bolts so far as I had the alloy in the shed.

It will be going for anodizing in the morning not sure how much that will be.

Can you guess what it is?

Jason.

Got it in one Bizi!

I tryed my DSLR on the guide scope but there was far to much movement in the rings to be of any use. I also wanted to be able to fit the Dslr ontop of the guide scope for wide field shots but couldn't.

I saw a review on the shed for the skywatcher mount but couldn't afford it, and it gave me an excuse to have a good go on the mill. Not sure how it compares with the size skywatcher's, I just made it to fit what I need.

Thanks guys.

We have a linishing machine at work so I use that for finishing when possible.

I should be picking it all up from anodising tomorow, so hopfully it will be put to use over the weekend

I dont have any templates starblazer, but I do have the CAD drawings I drew up!

I have assembled all of the parts and I am very happy with the result. It is rock solid and very smooth to adjust in both axis.:D

Just need to fit it to the scope now!

I put the 'blatent copy' onto the scope after work today, and everything fitted together perfectly.

When I first put it together it weighed in at 1.15kg.

So I drilled some extra holes and milled out some pockets on the underside of the plates to lighten things up. It now weighs 0.75kg.

Just need a plastic M8 knob for the side to side adjustment and I am ready to go.

Don't think I will be making to order it took ages to make on a hand operated mill.

Serious answer this time! That looks like a really good piece of kit - one suggestion, use a big easy to use knob on the adjuster. I have a SW version and it is surprising how tricky it is to use in the dark! Additionally a larger knob means the whole thing is easier to turn and therefore less likely to move the scope too much.

These British - they get hold of perfectly good Chinese equipment and blatently copy it!!!!!

s'all right, the Chinese version was blatent copy of mine (from about 12yrs ago) in the first place :)  Serves me right for putting the designs on the web!

Hi Jason

What kind of milling machine is it that you've been using? as I've been using a friend's old pinnacle for the bit's I've been doing. It has a DRO but its hit and miss. Nice work and keep it up

Thanks Damian, I was using a Bridgeport with a DRO. The machine is knackered but the DRO and locking the axis made it surprisingly accurate.

Thanks very similar machines.

I will be posting pic's of 3 Dob builds when I get chance.

Its taken a long time up to now but I've enjoyed it and gotta admit I'd love a milling machine myself.

For now I have the kind use of a friend's engineering workshop which has everything I need in it.

Great work again ;-)
