Good Books on the Sun

I've just finished reading the section of 'Universe' (the text book for the UCLAN astronomy course) and I'm interested in finding out a little more about our closest star, and solar physics in general.

Does anyone have any recomendations for good books on the subject?

These are good basic/ introductory books on the Sun.

Thanks, got a copy of the guide to the sun second hand from Amazon for £4 + postage. The other is he wrong side of £50 so will have to wait a little.

I cant believe that I've never thought about the sun for the last 30 odd years, but its a fantasically interesting object, so easy to see

A good popular science book about the history and science of helioseismology is Bill Chaplin's "Music of the Sun".

Kaufmann is great! I followed some UCLAN courses as well. Their Sun and Earth Climate course had Nearest Star (Leon Golub and Jay M Pascharoff, Havard, ISBN 0-674-00467-1) as its textbook. Pretty good.

There is two books I'm interested in about the sun.......a complete idiots guide to the sun and the one mentioned above....guide to the sun. Anyone have them?

They still use that book then? I was in uni 15-18 years ago and we used it back then - I still have mine (4th ed) and have decided to give it another read. It's fun to see how much has changed in that time, for example "Many astronomers suspect that the true age of the universe is probably about 15 billion years, which is the age of the oldest stars".

When I was in uni, the age of the universe was "somewhere between 10 and 20 billion years old". Now we know it to within a few tens of millions of years.

Just in the process of reading this now, and I'd agree it is an excellent, up-to-date (2nd edn, 2014), introduction to the sun. Lots of facts and not too technical, and covering studies from space as well.

Perhaps not quite what you're looking for, but I found The Sun Kings a very good read. It covers the early history of solar observation, photography and some of the theories that resulted.

Question: What is the level of the text Universe ? 

Is it suitable for non physics science graduates as a good introduction to general astronomy ?
