Default BST Explorers - 1st February 2012, 08:30 PM

What does the forum make of these? I am now without any eyepieces at all after sending back my baader zoom. I was thinking about these perhaps 4 of them (7mm, 12mm, 18mm, 25mm)

I think they're great value and have a quality feel to them. I've not got a 12mm but I have a 5,8,18 and 25 you can try.

I wonder how the 5mm will perform in my fl 10 refractor, just realised they don't do a 6mm or 7mm, might have to settle for 8mm

I don't want to start a new thread, but may have too. Has anyone compaired these to Hyperions or Antares possls?

I had the intention of geting a couple of TMB's, but the Explorers have good write ups, but are they any better than my Antares? I have a F6.25 semi apo and a F5 Newt and would like to crank the power up on the Apo for planatery viewing.

Thanks for any input,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I have the 8mm BST and a 5mm Hyperion. Both are keepers!, I don't think that I can justify the cost of the Hyperion against the BST except that by removing the field lens in the Hyperion it becomes a true 2" eyepiece with a focal length of 17mm so I get two eps for the price of one!.

Cheers

Damian,

The Antares plossls have great contrast but the TMB's have a great rep for sharp images especially when pushing your scope to it's limit on any given night. Then I read all this stuff about BST's giving TMB's a run for there money.

I have actually thought about selling all my Hyperions and plossls to fund some Delos or even after a bit of saving a Ethos, but I can't justify the same cost on an EP as the scopes I use.

I just bought 4 of them 25mm, 18mm, 12mm and 8mm. If My Tal will handle a 5mm I will get one of those too. They appear to be a bargin and there is just too much good feedback to ignore them any longer.

only managed a first light with the 12mm bst on the moon and jupiter for a short while.
very crisp view right across the 60% field in my f11. feels very solid.
the moon was tack sharp. jupiter was nice , with bands easily seen at x83.
im very happy with my purchase, and the 18mm is on the list now.

Well I have had a go with someones (Cheers Paul) BST's tonight at a star night and tried 8mm, 18mm and 25mm and they were excellent in my fl10 refractor. I looked at Jupiter with the 8mm and used the 18mm and 25mm at various clusters and M42. Very crisp views right to the edge of field, stars pin point and tight with no visable imperfections of any kind. Jupiter was excellent, well defined and fitted with all 4 visable moons in the generious 60 degree field of view, and mine should arrive in the post tomorow I had a 25mm Celestron X-Cel recently, the latest ones. the view in the BST was every bit as good, certainly as far as my scope goes at least. In IMHO do not believe it would been worth paying the extra £30 quid for the Celestrons, the build quality was better than I had expected too!

they have a good reputation that keeps on growing. i think for the price it seems a no brainer.
so you having four focal lengths ordered in one hit ? nice one .

With the addition of fine tuning rings most of the Hyperions offer 4 focal lengths per eyepiece, as well as screw threads for camera attachment. They also have a wider field of view (68 vs 60 degrees), but these extra features mean they cost just under £100.

Yeh, your right! I spent about 4 hours last night reading about "TMB style clones, BST's, Hyperion EP's and FTR's for Hyperion. I may just go down that road just now, but I still have in the back of my head. "Sell the lot and get a TV or two eyepieces. What to do? What to do.....? I just don't know. I need to see if I can get more use from the equipment regularly to justify upgrading my EP's again.

Thanks for your help,
