POW not any more? -
13th January 2012, 08:16 AM
I wondered if the POW has stopped in 2012, or is there just a delay (I can imagine that in these busy days...)?

- I must be really thick, I just haven't worked this out yet ?
Without starting a proper discussion, it would be interesting to hear what the forum members enjoy most about the weekly POW roundups.
So I guess the question is in order, what would you guys/gals most like to KEEP from the current format?
As you may be aware ADMIN are very busy testing and trialling new forum software with new options, so there are absolutely NO promises of anything being implied here, but as always members opinions are of utmost interest
So, let's open it up...........
Cheers
Tim

Hi Tim,
I like POTW, although for my tastes (forum software notwithstanding), it would be quite nice to see a thumbnail gallery of each of the week's selected images without having to open each of the threads. One of the great things about POTW is that it introduces image(r)s, techniques, compositions and objects that one may not be aware of as we don't all subscribe to every forum (I quite like seeing the planetary and sketches that bubble up to POTW without following those specific sub forums).
Thumbs up for POTW!
Mike

Fully agree. I realize it is a lot of work, but it was an excellent way of keeping track with all the wonderful imaging going on here.

A lot of people appreciated POW as a bitesize edition of the imaging board, without having to go through each and every image, which takes a good few hours, especially after a clear week in winter!
Please keep your comments coming in this thread, the more interest/support there is, the more likely we are to get something organised that suits the majority.
Thanks
Tim

I think it's an excellent idea,it gives us novices an idea what can be achieved and with what sort of gear.Iwould think it would encourage more people to try their luck to see if they can learn about it,without spending an absolutr fortune

is it possiable the new forum software can show all images that have been uploaded to it, in the last say 7 days automatically, and then show the best winning ones from that? i can only imagine it would be eaiser for the judges and for the users to see what the competition is

Thanks. To be fair, going through the existing imaging sections will give a better idea of who can do what with which equipment, and those sections are readily available and very frequently updated.

Re: POW not any more? -

I really liked the picture of the week, but I can see that an awful lot of work went in to it not only in judging the pictures but then in writing in up the accompanying commentary.
So I can see that probably the most important thing to make PoW sustainable is to cut down the work for the admins / mods looking after it.
In that vein, would it be possible for posters or readers to recommend an image for PoW and have users vote? I'd let users vote for as many images as they like, but only one vote for each image per registered user and I'd keep the total votes accessible only to mods / admins. The final determination could still be by the judge(s) and they'd be free to overrule the vote but maybe it might cut down the work a bit?

I feel POW is a great institution and 'very SGL' in that it is not a competition but a celebration and a chance to get together for a share of the week's action.
It obviously does ask an awful lot of those who do it. I'd have thought that some way of reducing the workload would be a good thing. More judges (using the term for want of a better one.) Small groups of volunteers to split the DS and planetary? Limiting the coverage to DS in the dark time and solar system in the moon time?
Whatever you guys decide, I'm sure we're all appreciative of the effort.

I think UK Astro Imaging has a good format and you could take some parts of it. Have a vote button on each thread where images are forwarded by other members as POW. You can then count the votes each time you decide to publish and have POW for each category to ensure an even spread. Even have a newcomers section, but this might still be a manual process as stunning images by sessioned imagers might dominate.
That would take the work load away mostly, be fair and of course the counters are reset to zero each time you publish. It would refelect the community and not the individual person responsible for POW that week. With a little bit of effort, it could almost be admin free.

Has anyone at SGL considered what the 'purpose' of this competition/event is? If you create a judging panel of expert imagers and give them no terms of reference other than to 'pick their favourite images' then it is obviously going to turn into a merry go round of congratulation for expert imagers. We all know Olly, Tim, Martin & co are great imagers. Is that what you were trying to achieve? Is that what the hobby needs?
I know the judges try hard to compensate, but it stands to reason if you ask expert imagers to pick their favourite shots they are going to favour images by other expert imagers that show technical competence they aspire to. On the other hand, to a 'lay' judge, it is all wizardry and this can have the effect of levelling the playing field. This is probably why we see a more balanced selection in published media. Other levelling factors would be remit or artistic interpretation, although I am not sure how practical it is to include these in a weekly astronomy competition.
The event lost credibility for me when some regulation deep sky shot (albeit superlatively well delivered) won POTW in December 2010 lunar eclipse week. Needless to say there were dozens of great lunar eclipse shots posted.
