M51 SN2011dh - close up -
9th June 2011, 10:42 PM
Here is a comparison of two images of M51 taken with my C11 at f/6.3. The LH image taken on the night of 7th June through slightly hazy conditions showing the SN2011dh. I used a one shot colour ST2000XCM camera.

Surprised no one has commented on this - loads of details and a great record of the SN.. Great work.

This is a great comparison. Just a question if I may ............. We see the supernova in June of 2011 - When did it actually explode? How many years ago?

Is that just a hot green pixel in the lower galaxy? Just below and to the right of the central formation where the dust clouds end?
If it's not it's something else that was absent in the 2008 image.
(Spotted another just above the core of the main galaxy below the red star to the left of the supernova)

Heh. No worries.
What do people generally do to compare images to check for deviations? Difference overlays in Photoshop or is there some software that specifically checks astro images?
I can't remember what documentary I watched a few weeks ago but they were going on about stars that may disappear without going Supernova. I imagine 'finding" one of those would be really tricky.
